Highland - Wild Brown Trout

The countless lochs that lie scattered amongst the rugged beauty of the Highlands provide some of the most dramatic, peaceful and isolated places to fish on the planet.

For it was on one such lochan, watched only by red deer and golden eagles, that as a nipper I caught my very first fish. While no monster, the half-pound brown trout spawned a lifelong obsession and I return every May to the area in which both the angler and the whisky aficionado is spoiled for choice.

In the ethereal light of the endless evenings that lead up to Midsummer, I have since had plenty of time to reflect on the strange contrast between the raw rocks of the Highlands and the mellow smoothness of its Scotch. And while pondering on the fact, I have accounted for quite a few beautifully spotted breakfast-sized trout.
